Custom Bracing

What is Custom Bracing?

Do you want to be more active? Do you have pain when moving? Whether it is your ankle, knee, neck or back, pain can stop you from enjoying life. Often, joints become unstable over time with arthritis, injuries, or surgeries. This can lead to more bone rubbing on bone, causing pain. A custom bracing can make a world of difference in enjoying daily activities.

Braces come in all shapes and sizes, fitting a variety of joints, including the spine and are designed to help support and stabilize a joint while also managing pain. However, it is important to understand that generic braces are nowhere near as effective as a custom-fitted brace. There are many different types of braces that are specifically designed for each unique injury or condition and it is important to get the right fitting brace for you.

For a number of common conditions, custom bracing solutions can provide patients with the support they need to address the situation that is causing pain or restricting mobility. Braces can also be a great preventative measure against injury or reinjury. When fitting a patient for a custom brace, practitioners take a patient’s pain levels, expectations, body size and shape, intended duration of use, and type of work/activity into account in order to ensure that the brace will be comfortable and effective.

Custom Bracing Can Help With:

  • Ligamentous Knee Injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, meniscus tears)
  • Various knee injuries (i.e. Patellofemoral syndrome, jumper’s knee)
  • Joint pain, injuries, and swelling
  • Ligament laxity or weakness
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee and ankle
  • Knee Stabilization/Knee instabilities
  • Excessive Pronation or Pes Planus
  • Plantar Fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tears, Sprains & Strains
  • Arthritis
  • Pre and Post surgery
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Golfer’s Elbow
  • Tendinitis/Tendinosis
  • Low back pain
  • Patellar tip syndrome (patellar tendonitis)
  • Lateralization of the patella (dislocation)
  • High riding patella (patella alta)
  • Meniscopathy

Benefits Of Custom Bracing

Custom bracing has a long list of advantages but the main benefits of custom bracing include:

  • Customization: These braces are able to be tailored to the patient’s specific needs and the custom design will help you recover from injury faster because it is tailored for your unique body shape. Everyone has different needs and those needs often cannot all be met by an off-the-shelf brace. Custom bracing ensures that the brace will be both comfortable and practical.
  • Pain Reduction: The custom fit and application of braces helps them do their job better. That means less pain as you go through your day without restricting your movement.
  • Lower risk of reinjury: If you have a joint or limb weakened by a past injury, bracing can add extra strength and support to prevent a recurrence.
  • Confidence: Custom braces make it easier for you to move confidently, with less worry about unwelcome jolts of pain. That means fear of reinjury and more freedom of movement.

FAQs

Will my insurance cover bracing?

At NHRC, all of our chiropractors and physiotherapists are able to assess patients for custom and off-the-shelf braces. The process begins by coming into the clinic and meeting with a practitioner who will help to determine a patient’s bracing needs. From there, practitioners will develop a treatment plan, determine which brace will best suit the patient’s needs, and measure the patient for the brace. NHRC will place the order and call when the brace has arrived at the clinic. In most instances, braces ordered through NHRC can be ready within a couple weeks!

Do I need a referral?

No, a referral is not necessary to come in for a bracing appointment! In some cases though, insurance companies may require a prescription so check with your insurance company before coming in for your appointment.

How are custom braces different from off-the-shelf/pre-made braces I can buy at the drug store or online?

Custom braces are tailored to your specific needs, body type, and activity level in a way that off-the-shelf braces are not. Custom brace sizing can also be customized to your exact body dimensions. In some cases, an off-the-shelf or pre-made brace or splint is a great choice, often to help manage mild-moderate aliments like strains or sprains, while moderate-severe aliments/injuries and/or hard to fit joints will require a custom made brace.

Over-the-counter bracing is used to reduce swelling and provide light stability to a joint to promote a faster recovery time. They come in a variety of prefabricated sizes and styles, which can be altered but may not fit perfectly or tailor completely to a patient’s needs.

Do I have to wear my brace all the time to get relief?

How long you wear your brace depends on the extent of your injuries.

Some professionals will recommend wearing your brace during only part of the day for better pain relief; often, immobilizing and supporting a joint can calm it and relieve pain. A brace can also be worn during certain activities that have a higher chance of exacerbating your injury such as during exercise or strenuous activity.

However, if you have a more severe injury, it helps to wear your brace 24 hours a day. The point of wearing a brace is injury prevention as well as giving your body the opportunity to heal. Wearing your brace more often will give your body the support it needs to recover more quickly and help prevent reinjury during activity.
